Inheritance Tax Planning
According to a Scottish Widows report in January 2007, 4 in 10 families now face paying Inheritance Tax.
You can still do much to reduce the Inheritance Tax burden through effective planning. An appropriate provision can be made in your Will, which can potentially save tax for your children or beneficiaries.
Any married couple/civil partners worth more than £300,000 (tax year 2007/2008) could be leaving a large and unnecessary Inheritance Tax bill.
Inheritance Tax is charged at 40p of every £1 on the value of an estate over and above £300,000 (tax year 2007/2008)
| Value of assets | Inheritance Tax at 40% |
| £325,000 | £10,000 |
| £350,000 | £20,000 |
| £400,000 | £40,000 |
| £450,000 | £60,000 |
| £500,000 | £80,000 |
| £550,000 | £100,000 |
| £600,000 | £120,000 |
Will Planning
Without a Will your whole estate does not automatically pass to a spouse/registered civil partner or other members of the family as it is distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules. The consequences of this can be very serious and many families can face immediate financial hardship adding to the grief of the bereaved.
Should you have minor children you can decide who should take care for them after your death by appointing guardians and including these instructions in your Will.
The benefits of having a Will are that you can decide who should deal with your estate and how it should be distributed, as well as providing the option to stipulate if any gifts should be free of Inheritance Tax. Any donations to charity are completely exempt from Inheritance Tax.
